Wollongong

Wollongong lies approximately 80km south of Sydney and is New South Wales' third-largest city with
Wollongong
a laid-back population as well as culture and cuisine which are the equal of any other major city.

The town boasts some great beaches for surfing while the hills in the background are a scenic backdrop which provide nice walks and good views of the city and coast.

Things to See and Do

Surfers generally prefer riding the waves at North Beach compared to the Wollongong City Beach down south. Up the coast, other popular surf beaches include Sandon Point, Austinmer, Headlands and Sharkies.

Places of interest include the Wollongong City Gallery which displays various art collections, the Science Centre & Planetarium for scientifically inclined kids, the Wollongong Botanic Gardens for picnics and the Nan Tien Buddhist Temple which lays claim to being the largest temple in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Illawarra Escarpment south of the city is a state recreation centre and a spectacular park where visitors can go bush camping. Also south is Lake Illawarra for water sports enthusiasts and the popular holiday resort of Shell Harbour.

Getting to Wollongong

Bus operators such as Premier Motors, Murray's and Countrylink run services between Wollongong and centres such as Sydney, Eden, Canberra and Moss Vale.

Trains also run from Sydney to Wollongong before continuing south to Kiama, Gerringong and Bomaderry. Travelers by car or motorcycle should travel via the Princes Highway freeway.
