One of Ballarat's star attractions, Sovereign Hill is aimed at educating tourists on the mid 1800's gold rush that occurred in this area. Actors and staff dress in period costumes and present demonstrations and street theatre for guests, depicting life from this era. Students who participate in one of their student programs can also dress up in costume and take part in the every day life during the gold rush. With real horses pulling carts down the street, artisans working with rustic tools and dirt roads, Sovereign Hill gives you the chance to tour a gold mine and then go on to see the entire township, riding in a horse-drawn carriage. They also offer a gold museum where you can see collections from around the world, gold nuggets and jewelry, as well as rare books. There is also a hotel where guests can spend the night. Despite the old-fashioned town, the hotel is quite luxurious and is the perfect way to finish off a day in the 1800's.
