South Molle Island in the Whitsunday Islands

South Molle Island

The Molle group of the Whitsundays is made up of the South Molle, Mid Molle and North Molle islands, the largest of which is South Molle Island.

Known for the variety of bird life that inhabit the island, South Molle is mainly national park and has plenty of beautiful secluded beaches as well as some 15km of splendid walking trails. Visitors to the island can literally spend hours exploring the island on foot.

Rolling hills are scattered around South Molle Island, many of which provide great views of the surrounding sea and islands. These include The Horn, Lamond Hill, Mount Jeffreys and Spion Kop, the latter two of which are particularly impressive.

The South Molle Island Resort is a family-oriented resort with a range of features and facilities on offer including guided walks, a golf course and spa as well as various outdoor and watersports activities. Cruises out to the Great Barrier Reef and scenic helicopter flights around the Whitsundays can also be organised through the resort.

If you want to do a bit of camping, there's a campsite at the uninhabited North Molle Island just 2km away run by the Queensland Parks and Wilderness Service. Contact the QPWS Whitsunday Information Centre at Airlie Beach or ask at the resort for more information.

Fantasea Cruises has day-trips to South Molle Island with boats departing from Shute Harbour near Airlie Beach.
