Port Arthur
The penal establishment Port Arthur was a destination for thousands of convicts during the mid-19th century. With the aid of convict labour, industries such as timber milling, shipbuilding, coal mining and shoemaking would thrive here, making it more than just a prison town. Port Arthur also became notorious in 1996 when a deranged gunman shot at visitors and staff resulting in the deaths of some 35 people. The town's primary tourist attraction is the magnificent Port Arthur Historic Site which is undoubtedly one of Tasmania's premier tourist attractions. See our detailed Port Arthur map.
