Australia's oldest mint, the Perth Mint, first opened on June 20, 1899 after being built by John Forrest. The mint was initially established as a branch of the Royal Mint in London to manufacture sovereigns for use as currency in the colony. The Perth Mint today provides services to the gold industry and manufactures various coin-related items for investors and coin collectors.
