The Old Fremantle Prison was constructed on a hilltop in 1842 by men shipped from the Isle of Wight where it was in use as a maximum-security institution until 1991. Today, the prison is a museum where visitors can explore the region's convict heritage or go for one of the tours available which includes tours of the main cell blocks as well as more adventurous candlelight tours.
