Recent developments have transformed Nelly Bay into Magnetic Island's main hub of activity. The bay is the island's first point of access where most guests arriving from Townsville are dropped off by the ferries at the impressive Magnetic Island Harbour Ferry terminal. Nelly Bay also serves as Magnetic Island's main residential area where a variety of accommodation options ranging from cottages to apartments, resort-style cabins and even a hostel for backpackers can be found. Shopping and amenities are conveniently located at Nelly Bay, mostly near the terminal, as are local bus services, taxis, tour operators and car or bicycle hire companies. The beach here is a popular place for a relaxing stroll while the adjacent clear waters accommodate the full range of watersports and activities such as swimming, snorkeling, windsurfing or sailing in a catamaran. Further up the beach at the northern end are shaded picnic areas for families with coin-operated barbecue facilities as well as playgrounds for the children.
