Lake Wendouree in Ballarat

Lake Wendouree

Lake Wendouree is renowned as the location where the first Ballarat resident camped. Its part in the history of the area is significant, as can be seen by the many historical sights along its shore.

Today, the lake is a place to relax and enjoy such activities as kayaking, jogging and swimming. To preserve the crystal clear water, there are strict regulations as to what activities are permitted near the lake’s shore. The result is a clean and uncontaminated area for recreation.

Lake Wendouree is kept well-stocked with fish for fishing enthusiasts and is one of the more popular fishing areas in Victoria. It also features a 6 km running track that circles the entire lake and an old-fashioned ferry which once took visitors to the Botanical Gardens. The lake is also a destination for bird watchers who may spot up to 40 different species in one day.

Locals and tourists alike flock to the area year round to enjoy the lovely views and recreational activities. Whether you are interested in bird watching, history or just relaxing by the water, Lake Wendouree is the perfect place to enjoy a day outdoors.
