Katoomba is the main destination town for visitors to the popular Blue Mountains region. Founded in
the latter part of the 19th century as a tourist destination, tourism has flourished with the restoration of many of its original guesthouses and hotels. Katoomba features some breathtaking scenery as well as a range of colourful art-deco shops and houses. The town is home to numerous poets, artists and environmentalists and serves as a great destination for visitors, particularly from Sydney, looking to unwind and relax. Things to See and Do
The scenic Echo Point lies towards the southern end of town and features stunning views of the Jamison Valley as well as the Three Sisters rock formation which are a sight to behold at night and come complete with their own legendary story of sorcery which explain their existence. The Scenic Railway was built in the 1880s originally as a means to transport coal miners. Together with the Skyway and Sceniscender cable car systems, they provide an excellent way to view and experience the Blue Mountains. The Blue Mountains are almost perfectly sculpted for activities such as abseiling, canyoning rock climbing, trekking, scrambling and cycling. Several companies located around Katoomba can provide courses for beginners or organise these activities for intermediate or advanced visitors. Bushwalking in Katoomba is an almost compulsory activity and the best places to do so are Jamison Valley, towards the south, and Grose Valley, northeast of Katoomba. Various tours to the Blue Mountains and the Jenolan Caves are run by operators as well as bushwalking and four-wheel drive tours. Yulefest is held annually between the months of June and August, peaking at the Winter Magic Festival which consists of a street parade and miscellaneous market stalls which welcome the winter solstice.
