Heron Island
Heron Island lies 72 km east of Gladstone and is a small but fascinating island just one km long and
0.17 square km in area. Apart from the local resort and research station on the north-eastern end of the island, most of Heron Island is national park. Things to See and Do
Heron Island is a true coral cay, covered with dense populations of pisonia trees and surrounded by 24 square km of reef. Many visitors to Heron Island come here for the excellent scuba diving. Apart from snorkeling over the shallow reef, the resort has a dive boat which transports divers to the many fine diving sites. A dive shop provides a full range of diving equipment for hire and six-day diving courses, with certificate, are also available. Other available activities here include guided reef walks, nature walks as well as fishing trips which can be arranged at the resort.
Heron Island Hotels and Accommodation
The Heron Island Resort provides accommodation for up to 250 guests and has its own bar, disco and tennis courts. Rooms at the resort range from lodge rooms, simple three to four-bed bunkrooms with shared bathroom facilities as well as modern motel-style suites.
Getting to Heron Island
Visitors can travel direct to the Heron Island resort via a half hour journey by helicopter from Gladstone. Operators in Gladstone also have fast catamarans which travel to Heron Island at a cheaper rate. The journey by sea takes approximately two hours.
