Fraser Island
Fraser Island, which spans 120 km in length and 15 km wide, is the world's largest sand island and was
inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1993. The island is named after Eliza Fraser, who survived on the island with the help of Aborigines after her ship was wrecked further north in the early 19th century. Things to See and Do
Approximately 200 lakes are scattered around Fraser Island with some of these lakes being excellent for those who wish to go for a swim. Apart from that, Fraser Island is a delight for those who like nature with its beaches, sand dunes, forests, walking tracks, wildlife and clear freshwater lakes and streams. Visitors can also go fishing or explore the many trails and beaches by walking, biking or with a four-wheel drive.
Fraser Island Hotels and Accommodation
There are a few resorts on the island such as the Eurong Beach Resort, Happy Valley Resort and the luxurious Kingfisher Bay Resort for visitors who prefer more comfortable forms of Fraser Island accommodation while more affordable beachside cabins and camping grounds are also available.
Getting to Fraser Island
Flights, buses and tours to Fraser Island operate out of Hervey Bay which acts as the main access point to the island. Various vehicle ferries, also known as barges, travel to the island with some traveling from Inskip Point to the southern end of the island, from River Heads to the west coast and from Urangan to Moon Point. You may be happy to just hitchhike around the island, which is common practice. Otherwise, you will need a four-wheel drive vehicle capable of traveling without getting bogged down in sand. A range of these vehicles are available for hire at Kingfisher Bay with fuel also available at Eurong, Happy Valley and Cathedral Beach. Be sure to drive with care to protect yourself and also the environment. When not driving on the beach, stick to the driving tracks. Be particular cautious on the western beach which has dangerous swamps and holes which should be avoided for obvious reasons.
Tourist Information
A range of leaflets covering the various walking trails, wildlife and fauna as well as general information can be obtained from the Fraser Island visitor centre at Eurong on the east coast of the island. You can obtain general supplies and use public telephones in areas such as Eurong, Happy Valley and Cathedral Beach.
