The Eureka Centre, in the town of Ballarat, is a museum commemorating one of the most significant chapters in the country’s evolution towards democracy. The centre is located next to where the Eureka Rebellion of the 1850s took place, when tensions over the administration and granting of licenses to gold diggers resulted in riots between the diggers and the authorities and the deaths of 30 miners and five soldiers in 1854. The centre not only stands as a lasting symbol of the struggle against injustice and oppression, but is also a popular tourist attraction where visitors can gain insight into Ballarat's historical past via a range of interesting multimedia displays and presentations. Visitors can currently take advantage of the Ballarat Eureka Pass which as well as providing admission to the Eureka Centre, also gives ticket holders access to Sovereign Hill and the Gold Museum. In addition, the Eureka Centre also serves as the main visitor information centre for Ballarat where staff can assist visitors with any queries they may have about the town.
