The Central Deborah Gold Mine in Bendigo offers visitors a chance to share in the city's rich history through one of the best underground mine tours in Australia. After gold was first discovered near central Bendigo in 1851, it became known throughout the world as 'Gold Mountain'. The mine was the last to operate commercially in Bendigo, and was reopened in 1986 for underground tours, giving visitors the opportunity to explore the workings. The Mine Experience Tour allows visitors to venture some 60 meters below ground and walk in the footsteps of the miners who discovered gold. The more adventurous can take the Underground Adventure Tour which descends 85 meters below ground and includes climbing ladders and working mine drills. Alternatviely, for those wishing to stay above ground there's the Self-guided Mine Surface Tour with gold panning (entry to this tour is included in the admission price of the two underground tours). The Central Deborah Goldmine offers an informative visit for students, and school groups are invited to take the Mine Experience Tour during which they are given an overview of the history of gold mining in Bendigo. In addition, there's also the Underground Function Room, a unique event venue located 20 storeys below the Central Deborah Gold Mine.
