While most visitors to North Stradbroke Island head for the pristine beaches at the coast, the island's center consists primarily of dense vegetation that are a haven for wildlife and bushwalkers. Blue Lake National Park, in particular, lies approximately 9km east of Dunwich along Tazi Road on the way to Main Beach. The freshwater lake here is serene with crystal clear blue waters surrounded by a range of animals, fish and plants such as paperbarks, eucalypts, reeds and banksias. The lake was formed within a hollow in the island's water table. Perched just above is Tortoise Lagoon which fills and dries up depending on the season. The relaxed atmosphere here make it ideal for picnics and animal watching. Some visitors have also gone for a swim in the lakes although this is not recommended by the park. Walks are available up to Point Lookout via Keyhole Lake or to Neembeeba Lookout which provides spectacular views of the southern regions of North Stradbroke Island as well as the Pacific Ocean and the Gold Coast.
