A remnant from Bendigo's gold rush days, the Bendigo Joss House is a Chinese house of prayer that is still currently used as such today. It is the only building of its kind still standing in the Victorian region. The Joss House was built for the express purpose of worshipping the Chinese god, Kwan Gung, god of protection and judgment. It is painted red to symbolize strength and is provides a unique insight into the religious side of Chinese culture. The prayer house consists of three main areas. The main temple hall is open to the public and is quite the tourist attraction with its elegance and historical charm. There's also an ancestor's hall and a caretaker's house with only the caretaker's house being off limits to visitors. The temple courtyard features a round pond and a plain garden, consistent with the simple design of the building. The Bendigo Joss House is a tribute to the ancient Chinese gold rush miners and serves as both a historical and cultural marker of the city of Bendigo's heritage.
