The Bendigo Art Gallery houses a variety Australian art ranging from colonial paintings of the 1850s to present day contemporary works. Its constantly-growing collections include art from the Bendigo goldfields as well as 19th century European paintings, sculptures and decorative arts. Located 150 kilometers north-west of Melbourne, the regional gallery was founded in 1887, the year of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, and opened in 1890. Drury Court and Abbot Court, subsequently added to the gallery after its opening, are furnished with ornate plaster arches and cornices as well as polished wood floors to reflect the grand European tradition of gallery design. Exciting exhibitions and events are scheduled annually while included also in the gallery's program are guided tours, workshops, talks by arts professionals and films as well as educational activities for school groups. A range of art-related gifts can be perused or purchased at the Gallery Shop and guests can also enjoy refreshments and light meals at the gallery's cafe.
